Fuse Market For Automotive – Demand For An Increase In Vehicle Power And Battery Capacity In Electric & Hybrid Vehicles

An automotive fuse is an electronic component which is used to protect the devices, wiring and electronic components of the vehicle from over current flow. Automotive fuse is generally rated or used for circuits that have direct current higher than 12 volts except in certain cases it is rated for electrical systems with 42-volt. There are five different types of automotive fuses namely blade, bosch, limiter, lucas and glass tube. Blade type automotive fuses are used for different ampere ratings ranging from two ampere, three ampere, four ampere, five ampere to 120 ampere. Also, there is a color coding used for blade fuses, which is classified according to different ampere ratings. For instance, for one ampere black color is denoted, similarly for 35 ampere blue green color is denoted and for 120 ampere purple color is denoted. For bosch type fuses, color coding is done for different ampere including five ampere (yellow color), eight ampere (white color), 16 ampere (red or green color), 25 ampere (blue color) and 40 ampere (grey color). Similarly, there is color coding for each fuse type, which depends on the ampere rating of the fuse. Automotive fuse manufacturers are focused on developing their product range catering to the demand for innovative and wide product coverage among automobile manufacturers.
Designing attractive packaging for automotive fuses is a key trend among automotive fuse manufacturers. This is attributed to offer convenience, varied selection and tool availability to the customer. For instance, availability of two different fuses in one pack ensures customer need for broad vehicle range, compact packaging allows ease of storage and availability of tools results in one pack helps safe usage of the tool, when required. The demand for an increase in vehicle power and battery capacity in electric & hybrid vehicles is projected to fuel the demand for high voltage fuse for traction motor and battery. On the other hand, the major factors hindering the growth of the automotive fuse market for ICE vehicles is very limited development in the field of low voltage fuse.
The global fuse market for automotive is segmented into type, electric vehicle , vehicle, battery output, aftermarket, and region. In terms of type, fuse market can be divided into semiconductor and four other segments. The market for semiconductor fuse is projected to grow during the forecast period by value, as these types of fuses are used to increase the safety of the electrical circuits and various components such as lighting system, infotainment system, and brake and clutch pedal circuits among others. Hence, with an increase in focus towards safety, & luxury, the demand for these fuse types will be on the rise. A single semiconductor fuse has the ability to handle more than one electrical circuit with increased safety and durability. Due to the increasing use of ECUs and advanced features in vehicles, the semiconductor fuse market is expected to grow in the future.
Based on electric vehicle, the fuse market for automotive can be classified into hybrid electric vehicle and two more segment. The fuse market of hybrid electric vehicle segment is projected to be the largest market, by value, owing to the highest sales of hybrid electric vehicle, globally, especially in Asia Pacific region. Increasing demand for the premium hybrid electric vehicle is expected to showcase a huge impact in the automotive fuse market owing to the number of fuses used in the high end  vehicle segments are much higher than the low end vehicle segments.
Geographically, the global fuse market for automotive can be segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa. Asia Pacific and Europe are estimated to dominate the automotive fuse market during the forecast period. While Asia Pacific is estimated to be the largest market, Europe is estimated to be the fastest growing market during the forecast period by value, in which 48V vehicles is estimated to play a major role.
Increasing demand for vehicle safety features and government mandates on safety technologies such as airbag are expected to drive the automotive fuse market in the Asia Pacific region. On the other hand, the market growth in Europe can be attributed to the increased sales of electric vehicle in countries such as Norway, France, and the Netherlands. Automotive OEMs in Europe are also known for their early adoption of vehicle safety features. Driver seatbelt reminders, TPMS, gear shift indicator, protection of pedestrians are some of the safety features mandated by the European Union which eventually increase the application of fuse.
Key players operating in the global fuse market for automotive are Eaton, ON Semiconductor, Littelfuse, Inc., MERSEN, Pacific Engineering Corporation, SCHURTER Holding AG, OptiFuse, and EM Components (USA), Inc.
